Annual Conference
Exhibitor Recognition, 50 Years & Counting

Wanda Traver, RHIT, a Senior Active member of the Association provided the impetus for this recognition of our exhibitor community. Wanda provided the Central Office with a report that she wrote in 1993 for Stephen Fisher of Medrex who was preparing an Association retrospective for the 1993 Annual Conference.

Wanda reported that our Association, then called the New York State Association of Medical Record Librarians, held its organizational meeting February 22 and 23, 1935 in Syracuse. The first annual meeting was held May 23 and 24, 1935 in New York City. For the first few years, the annual meeting alternated between Buffalo and New York City. No meetings were held in 1942 or 1943 because of wartime, but Executive Committee meetings occurred in Buffalo in 1942 and in New York City in 1943. Tri-State Conferences (NJ, NY, PA) were held in 1949 in Atlantic City and in 1950 in Buffalo.

About our exhibitor community, Wanda found no listing of exhibitors until 1954. Her report included a list of exhibitor participation in annual meetings from 1954 to 1992. Wanda’s recollections about specific exhibitors included:

Addressograph Multigraph - made the old “metal plate” used to imprint patient information on the sheets of the medical record.
CPHA (Commission on Professional and Hospital Activities) – consultants who primarily assisted hospitals in collecting diagnosis and operative codes and statistics electronically.
Data Oriented Systems - electronically collected statistics, etc. for long term care facilities
Edison Voicewriter - had the old “wax” cylinders for dictating-after the transcription was completed, the cylinders were “shaved” and re-used.
Verifax - the forerunners of dry photocopy machines. They had a duplicating machine that worked much like developing print film. You exposed a document for a number of given seconds (depending on color of the paper) and then immersed it in a developing solution for a further given number of seconds and then drew the “negative” and the paper the image was to be copied on out together between a “squeegee”. You prayed that the image would come out straight and centered!!!! This was a circa 1953-54 innovation, and it sure beat typing the documents out.

Expanding on Wanda’s 1954 to 1992 exhibitor research, we have tracked our Annual Conference exhibitors since 1993 to keep our exhibitor list up to date.

NYHIMA values and appreciates the participation and support we receive every year from our exhibitor community. As we move forward, we wish to recognizes and say “Thank You” to all the exhibitors who have supported the Association throughout the years.
