New Technology Process for Inpatient Coding
This item will cover how University of Rochester Medical Center participates and implements the coding of new technology items that are requested by our clinical providers. 

Presenter:

Sommer Slavin, RN, MS, MBA, CCDS
Program Coordinator, Utilization Management, Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester 

Sommer Slavin has been with the University of Rochester’s Medical Center for over 15 years.  Her educational background is in Nursing, Leadership in Healthcare, Business Finance & Competitive & Organizational Strategy.

At the start of her career, she was a critical care nurse for one of the University’s facilities, Highland Hospital. From staff nurse she moved into the position of Unit Educator & was awarded the Nurse of Excellence Award for developing a new orientation pathway for critical care nurses. She left Highland to work for URMC’s Strong Memorial Hospital, as a Nurse Lead while obtaining her MBA at The Simon School of Business.  In 2008 she transitioned into the Utilization Management department as a staff nurse.  Once finished with her MBA she became the Utilization Management Department Manager for 8 yrs. 

In 2016, she assumed the role of Utilization Management Program Coordinator.  As a Program Coordinator, Sommer oversees and assists as a UM resource in the areas of standardization of UM practices across the URMC enterprise, integration of UM & new hospital technology systems across all affiliates, regulatory & compliance guidance related to CMS & NYS regulations as well as payor contracting specifics; and data analysis & guidance of CDI & CMI efforts for UM, HIM, & CDI.

DRG Updates for FY 2025
This item will review the new DRG’s and share those important changes that coders should be aware of.

Tia Lehr is the Inpatient Coding Lead for the University of Rochester Medical Center located in Rochester, New York and has over 30 years of coding experience.  Tia started her coding career at Rochester General Hospital as an outpatient coder; coding emergency room visits, cardiac catheterization, private surgical lounge and endoscopy visits prior transitioning to Inpatient coding.  After 10 years at RGH Tia took an Inpatient coding position with the University of Rochester Medical Center.  Her current duties are conducting coder audits, education, coding as needed, and working hand in hand with CDI and management.
