In Part 1 of this two-part CDI skills development series, participants will build a strong foundation for critically reviewing inpatient documentation with a focus on clinical validity, medical necessity, and financial integrity. This interactive session introduces a structured, end-to-end approach to analyzing inpatient encounters—from admission through discharge—while highlighting common documentation gaps that place organizations at risk for denials, downgrades, and recoupments.

Through facilitator-guided instruction and collaborative small-group case review, attendees will practice identifying insufficient or unclear documentation, evaluating diagnostic support, and understanding how documentation weaknesses translate into payer scrutiny. This session emphasizes CDI’s evolving role as a clinical partner and educator, moving beyond query generation to proactive documentation improvement.

Participants will leave with a practical review framework, increased confidence in analyzing inpatient records, and a preparatory assignment involving more complex cases to be addressed in Part 2.
