Denial management and appropriate reporting of modifiers

Program Overview: 

Coding and Billing staff at Hospitals are increasingly responsible for interpreting Medicare and Medicaid edits and determining when a modifier is appropriate. This presentation will summarize the key Medicare edits (OCE, MUE and CCI) as well as common hospital-outpatient modifiers and their application. We will review and summarize some of the issues surrounding the reporting of modifiers. Case examples will be utilized for the training.

Jean Russell has over thirty years of healthcare and information system experience. Her areas of expertise include the Medicare and NY Medicaid outpatient prospective payment systems (APCs and APGs), as well as Charge Description Master (CDM), and outpatient coding and billing compliance. She is a frequent speaker at the national, state and local levels for HFMA and AHIMA professional groups. Jean has a Master from the University of Houston in Biomedical Engineering; a Bachelor from Colgate University in Biology; and RHIT from the independent study program through the American Health Information Management Association.
