Presentation Description: This one-hour webinar presentation will provide an overview of best practices relevant to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (“SOGIE”), including topics such as culturally competent language, relevant legal protections, and best practices for effective advocacy and care for transgender, gender non-conforming, and non-binary patients.

Audience is all NYHIMA members: Management, Coders, CDI, ROI, Educators and Students.

Presenter:

Dena M. DeFazio, Associate at Barclay Damon, LLP in Albany, NY

Brief Bio: Dena focuses her practice on both regulatory and compliance issues in the health care industry as well as health care-related litigation and administrative proceedings.  She routinely assists with research, writing, and presentations, and drafts memoranda and other court documents.  Dena also routinely conducts trainings and presentations for health care practitioners, administrators, and employees on supporting the LGBTQAI+ community in professional health care environments, including how to approach sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.  Dena graduated summa cum laude from Albany Law School, and received her M.S.W. from the University at Buffalo.
